As the UF College Democrats kicked off the fall semester, we were so excited for the opportunity to meet with the Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. The Congresswoman is a UF alumnus, and she served as the Vice President of our own organization, the UF College Democrats, during her time on campus.
On Thursday, August 25, Debbie came to the Reitz Union at UF to meet with a select group of youth leaders from around Gainesville, and the UFCD executive board was invited. Our officers spoke with the Congresswoman about the current political climate in America, the importance of Democratic activism on campus, and what we need to do to reelect President Obama.
Shortly after the youth meeting, several of our officers canvassed fellow students to encourage their support for the President. We then rejoined Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz for a phone bank with other supporters from the community. UFCD officers made calls to Obama volunteers from 2008, asking for their continued help to get out the vote for his reelection.
The UF College Democrats are so proud to have hosted the Chairwoman of the DNC on our campus. We know that as a former UF College Democrat and the current Honorary Chair of the Florida College Democrats, Debbie Wasserman Schultz is committed to supporting student activism across the country.
